The roadworks taking place to straighten out a 23 kilometre stretch of National Highway N-340 running from Estepona to Guadiaro have generated traffic jams and delays along nearly the entire stretch of the road. The problem is worst in the stretch of road within the town of Estepona.
While the government's deadline to finish the works is in August, Autopistas del Sol, the construction company awarded the contract, says the works will be finished by June.
At the same time the roadworks on N-340 are taking place, a new toll freeway is being built between the same two towns by the same construction company, though the freeway will not open until the works to straighten out the N-340 have been completed. The company expects the toll road to be opened in the upcoming month of July, based on the progress that has been made up to the present.
